2008, wow!

December 30th, 2008

An insane rush to a graduate school deadline has been the latest culprit in my blog delays. But now that it is mostly out of the way, I would like to get this thing rolling again for real. I have several shoots lining up for January, as I hope to melt away some ice and get some action going.

And since the end of the year seems to be a good time for reflection, I would like to present to you a top 10 list of sorts: 10 of my favorite shots and shoots of the year.

I wanted it to be a full on top 10 favorite shots of the year, but that proved illogical, impractical and all sorts of other prefix-laden terms.

There is no particular order on these, and I will comment more on some than others.

1.) Photoshoot with Mackenzie Ashton:
This was definitely a highlight of the year, and one of my most productive shoots. It was also one of the most heavily planned. I teamed up with high school and college classmate Tessa Edwards for the makeup, and I am extremely proud of the results. This particular shot may not be the best, but I really like it a lot, and think it deserves more attention. I had been wanting to work with Mackenzie for a while, and what I got was nothing short of what I had hoped for. We all definitely need to work together again for the new year!

2) Katie at Split Rock: Blah blah, girlfriend photo. Whatev! I love this place, and this trip. (And this girl!) And I love this photo.

3) Lauryn’s graduation photos: I teamed up again with Tessa to shoot her sister’s graduation photos. This was also a very fun shoot, and productive. I got muddy and wet pants whilst taking this shot. Think before you sit in the grass!

4) Shoot with Natalya: This was the pleasant surprise of the year, and also one of my best shoots. 45 minutes or so yielded some great stuff, and hopefully we’ll be shooting again in January or February!

5) Betsy: This was another shoot that went incredibly well when I wasn’t sure what to expect. I got to shoot with a 5D and studio strobes, and I got to work with a good model in a cool location. What wasn’t there to like?

6) Now, Now Every Children: This shoot was one of the more elaborate I have done set-wise. I like how the idea captures their personality, and shows a fun and different band shot that stands out against the banal, insincere and samey stuff getting slapped on musicians these days.

7) Ashley and Jacob: Just one of those neat shots that came out great. Also, it was published in a JPG Magazine’s leftovers edition!

8 ) Katie and the light: I really like how the light worked out with the box, and the vintage feel, too.

9) Johnny Empire: I really like how all of the pieces came together here. I picked this one because I think it’s a bit overlooked, even though I think it’s great.

10) Many shots on Lake Nokomis, especially this one with Kristin: Good timing, in all senses of the word. (Especially note the time of day and what kind of light you get.) I really dig Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis.

I am having minor fits with Word Press, but I will get these workd out. I am also just picky about design … Also, I will leave with a bonus photo!

11) Ashley: We have had many great shoots together, and this one was awesome, too. I gotta visit Texas to shoot with some people again …

So there you have it! 2008 has been an insane year, and I am definitely looking forward to 2009. Expect a ton of photos, jumps on entries and some updates. And yes, regular posting again.

Thank you all so much for reading, and happy New Year!

-Jamie M.

I remember the Johnny Empire shots; those were all really cool.

(That’s me stifling my urge to just say “Jamie! All of your pictures are AMAZING!”, as sincere as that may be, and come up with something that sounds a little less generic.)
